Word Study: We are focusing on the sounds that short-a makes (a as in apple). We will continue to study short-a next week, as well as words that feature the “H-Siblings”: Th, Ch, Sh and Wh. Next week, you can ask your child who each “H-Sibling” is and what sound they represent.
Words of the Week were introduced today. Words of the Week are high-frequency sight words that children study to support their reading and spelling. These words offer opportunities to look closely at word structure to enhance memorization, and to decide whether the sounds in each word "follow the rules." Words that do not follow the rules are best memorized rather than using sound spelling. The words we looked at this week are: Does, Much, Of, That and So.
Math: Students are working on identifying combinations of ten, and addition and subtraction problem-solving in the form of story problems. At math work stations, they practiced number sequencing, estimation and addition with several hands-on activities. We estimated, counted, measured and weighed the apples we brought back from our field trip. We also found out how many bathrooms and how many steps there are in Little School for a project the admissions office is working on!
Social Studies: We focused on the 4-C's over the past two weeks, and continued learning about each other in meaningful ways. Students designed "t-shirts" that represent their unique combination of interests and talents. Through a series of surveys and resulting discussions, we learned that our class represents 8 spoken languages and 12 countries visited!
Writer's Workshop: As you know, students have begun thinking about their writing journals as prized-possessions-to-be. They designed a graphic organizer for their journal that will help them find writing ideas. It shows all the things they love, such as family, friends, games, pets, sports, music and themselves!
