As we get closer to the end of the year, our class is revisiting what makes us (an awesome) community. We have gone back to the ideas of friendship and celebrating what we have in common, as well as our diversity.
Students are exploring what makes them unique and special. We read "We Are All Alike...We Are All Different," a published book written by kindergarteners. Our class was inspired to create a book all about why it's good to have lots of different people in the world, and also a project called "What Makes Me...Me!"
The classroom was alive with excitement around all the different talents, languages, interests, religions, families, etc. that make us who we are! After each student shared their ideas, we attempted to categorize them (see chart photo). Many students expressed interest in teaching the class some words in languages other than English that they can speak or write!
Here are student responses to the question, "What makes you special?"
"I am Korean and I can sing. I play an instrument."
"I like subway trains."
"I have a lot of cousins!"
"I am proud I can sing and count to 20 in Chinese."
"I can count to 4 in Hebrew."
"My birthday is the same as Mickey Mouse's."
"I am a good friend."
"I live in New York!!"
"I speak Korean."
"I have lots of friends."
"I speak Filipino."
"I can speak Hebrew and German."
"I like my name and I speak Portuguese."
"I can read Harry Potter books."
We are excited to continue working on this project this week :-D
